Portugal in 7 Days: An Itinerary Starting in Lisbon

Seven days is enough to see Lisbon and a good sample of what lies around it. This itinerary keeps one base in Lisbon and adds day trips, so you unpack only once.

Day 1: Arrive and settle in

Arrive, check in and take a relaxed walk in your neighbourhood. Try a first pastel de nata and dinner in Baixa or Chiado.

Day 2: Historic Lisbon

Praça do Comércio, the Sé, Alfama and the viewpoints. A tram ride, if you like. See our guide to Lisbon in half a day.

Day 3: Belém and the riverside

Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower and the Monument to the Discoveries, then LX Factory in the afternoon.

Day 4: Sintra and Cascais

Palaces and coast in one day. Sintra in one day.

Day 5: Óbidos, Nazaré and Batalha

A medieval village, a monastery and a fishing town. See the route.

Day 6: Évora or Arrábida

Choose history (Évora) or scenery and the sea (Arrábida).

Day 7: Free day and departure

Shop for souvenirs, revisit a favourite neighbourhood and head to the airport. Plan extra time for your return to the airport.

Getting around

  • Lisbon centre: metro, trams and walking.
  • Day trips: a private driver saves time and lets you stop freely. See our private tours.
  • Airport: pre-book a transfer for the first and last day.

Tips

  • Do not overpack your days; Lisbon’s hills are tiring.
  • Reserve popular restaurants in advance.
  • Check opening times; many monuments close on Mondays or have midday breaks.
