Across the Tagus from Lisbon, the Setúbal peninsula is quieter than Sintra and often overlooked. It has green hills dropping to turquoise water, fishing towns, a hilltop castle and some of Portugal’s best-known dessert wine.
Serra da Arrábida
The Arrábida Natural Park has a winding mountain road with viewpoints over bays and beaches such as Portinho da Arrábida. The scenery is the main attraction; plan photo stops and a slow pace.
Sesimbra
A traditional fishing town with a sandy bay and a clifftop castle. It is a great place for grilled fish and seafood by the water.
Palmela Castle
A medieval castle with panoramic views across the peninsula and the Sado estuary, and on clear days towards Lisbon.
Azeitão
A village known for Moscatel de Setúbal wine, Azeitão cheese and traditional tortas. A wine or cheese stop fits well after the coast.
When to go
Spring and early autumn have mild weather and good light. In summer the beaches are busy, and weekends can be crowded on the Arrábida road; midweek is calmer.
Getting around
Public transport does not link these places conveniently. By car it takes about an hour from Lisbon, and a driver lets you enjoy the road without worrying about parking.
