You do not need to go to the Douro to enjoy Portuguese wine. The Setúbal peninsula, just south of Lisbon, has historic wineries, a famous dessert wine and good local food within an hour’s drive.
What to taste
- Moscatel de Setúbal. A fortified dessert wine made from Muscat grapes, with aromas of orange peel, honey and dried fruit.
- Red and white table wines from Palmela. The area is known for the Castelão grape and for blends from local producers.
- Azeitão cheese. A soft sheep’s milk cheese eaten with a spoon, often with bread and local wine.
- Tortas de Azeitão. A sweet rolled sponge cake, a village speciality.
A simple wine day
- Drive south across the Tagus towards Azeitão.
- Visit a winery for a tasting; many require a booking, so check in advance.
- Have lunch with local cheese and wine.
- Continue to Palmela Castle for the views over the vineyards.
- Optionally continue to Arrábida for the coast before returning.
Drinking and driving
Portuguese limits are strict, and tastings add up. A private driver lets everyone enjoy the wine and return safely. Our Setúbal district tour can include a winery stop on request, and our guide to Arrábida, Sesimbra and Palmela has more ideas.
Tips
- Book tastings ahead, especially weekends.
- Entrance fees and tastings are not included in our tours.
- Tell us about dietary requirements when you book.
