Cascais and Estoril: A Coastal Day Trip from Lisbon

Cascais is a fishing village that grew into one of Portugal’s most elegant seaside towns. With Estoril next door, it makes an easy half-day or full-day trip, about 30 km west of Lisbon.

What to do

  • Old town and marina. Walk the narrow streets, pass the small fish market and the harbour.
  • Beaches. Praia da Ribeira, Praia da Rainha and Carcavelos are popular; Atlantic water is cool.
  • Boca do Inferno. A dramatic sea cave and cliff near the town, popular for sea views.
  • Santa Marta lighthouse and museum. A picturesque lighthouse on the seafront.
  • Estoril. Gardens, the casino and a long beach, joined to Cascais by a seaside promenade.
  • Cabo da Roca. The westernmost point of mainland Europe, a short drive away.

Eating

Look for fresh fish, grilled sardines and seafood rice on the waterfront. Lunch by the sea is one of the best parts.

Getting there

A suburban train runs from Cais do Sodré in Lisbon along the coast to Cascais, around 40 minutes. By car or driver you can also reach Cabo da Roca and Sintra the same day.

Combine it

Most visitors pair Cascais with Sintra. Our Sintra and Cascais private tour does both with a driver. See our Sintra guide too, or request a quote.
