Is Lisbon Safe for Tourists? Practical Safety Tips

Portugal is regularly described as one of the safer countries in Europe, and Lisbon is welcoming to visitors. As in any busy tourist city, small precautions avoid most problems.

The main risks

  • Pickpocketing. The most common issue, especially on crowded trams (such as line 28), metro stations and at popular viewpoints.
  • Overcharging. Occasional with unmarked taxis or unclear prices; agree a price or use a meter, an app or a pre-booked service.
  • Unwanted offers. People who offer unsolicited help or sell items on the street in tourist areas; a polite “no, thank you” is enough.
  • Car break-ins. Never leave valuables visible in a parked car.

Practical tips

  • Keep your wallet and phone in front pockets or a zipped bag.
  • Do not leave your phone on a café table.
  • Use a registered taxi, an app or a pre-booked transfer; official taxis are clearly marked.
  • Keep copies of your passport and cards separate.
  • Be careful on cobblestones, especially at night after rain.
  • Emergency number: 112.

At the airport

Use official taxi ranks, ride-hailing pick-up areas or a pre-booked driver with your name on a sign; confirm the vehicle and driver details sent by the company. Learn more in our taxi, Uber or private transfer comparison.
