Portugal has many tour and transfer companies, from large operators to small family businesses. The best choice depends on what you need, but a few checks separate reliable providers from risky ones. Use this checklist before you pay.
1. Is it properly licensed?
In Portugal, tourist activity operators should be registered in the national register (RNAAT), and transport for passengers requires the appropriate licence (such as TVDE for ride services). Ask for the registration number; a legitimate company shows it on its website. Ours is RNAAT 555389/2023.
2. Is there passenger insurance?
Passenger liability insurance protects you in case of an accident. Ask to confirm it.
3. Are prices clear?
Good providers state what is included and excluded: tolls, parking, water, waiting time, extra stops. Watch for vague quotes and unexplained extras.
4. What do real customers say?
Read recent reviews on independent platforms, and look for patterns on punctuality, vehicle condition and communication.
5. What vehicles do they use?
Check capacity, luggage space, air conditioning and age. For groups, ask about vans and child seats.
6. Who are the drivers?
Professional, courteous drivers who speak your language make a difference. Ask what languages are offered and whether a licensed guide is available.
7. How do they handle delays?
For airport pick-ups, a good company tracks your flight and adjusts the pick-up time. Ask what happens if immigration lines are long.
8. What are the booking and cancellation terms?
Look for a clear policy. For example, we refund in full (minus payment fees) for cancellations up to 24 hours before the tour.
9. How easy is it to reach them?
Responsive communication before the trip predicts good service during it. Check that you can reach someone by phone or WhatsApp.
10. Is the payment method secure?
Use a secure payment link or recognised methods, and be cautious about unusual requests such as transfers to personal accounts.
