A Pilgrim’s Guide to Fátima and Santarém: Planning a Religious Tour from Lisbon

Portugal has a deep Catholic heritage. Within about two hours of Lisbon you can visit a 12th-century cathedral, a sanctuary linked to a Eucharistic miracle and one of the world’s major Marian shrines.

Lisbon Cathedral (Sé de Lisboa)

Built in the 12th century, soon after the city was retaken from the Moors, it is the oldest church in Lisbon. It has survived earthquakes and centuries of change and works as a quiet start to a pilgrimage.

Santarém: the Most Holy Miracle

The Church and Sanctuary of the Most Holy Miracle in Santarém is linked to the Eucharistic Miracle of Santarém, one of the oldest Eucharistic miracles in Portugal, recorded since the 13th century. A visit here slows down the day.

Fátima

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fátima, where three shepherd children reported apparitions in 1917. Key places include the Chapel of the Apparitions, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary (with the tombs of the seers), the Basilica of the Most Holy Trinity and, nearby, Aljustrel and the shepherds’ homes. Read more in our Fátima day trip guide.
