Day Trips

Óbidos, Nazaré and Batalha in One Day: A Silver Coast Itinerary

Three very different places can be combined in one long day from Lisbon: a medieval walled village, a Gothic masterpiece and a fishing town by the Atlantic. With a driver, the route is easy and leaves time for a seafood lunch.

Óbidos

About an hour from Lisbon, Óbidos is a small whitewashed village enclosed by medieval walls you can walk along. Its main street climbs to a castle, and it is known for ginjinha, a cherry liqueur served in a chocolate cup. Wear comfortable shoes; the cobbles are uneven and the walls have no railings in places.

Batalha Monastery

Built to celebrate the Portuguese victory at Aljubarrota in 1385, the Monastery of Batalha is a UNESCO World Heritage masterpiece of late Gothic architecture. Its decorated cloisters and the Unfinished Chapels are the highlights.

Nazaré

A traditional fishing town with a wide beach, famed worldwide for the giant waves at Praia do Norte in winter. Visit the upper quarter (O Sítio) for the view, and some local women still wear the traditional seven skirts. Dried fish and fresh seafood are on every menu.

Suggested order

  1. Morning in Óbidos before the tour groups.
  2. Batalha Monastery.
  3. Lunch in Nazaré, then the lighthouse viewpoint and beach.
  4. Return to Lisbon in the evening.

Practical tips

  • It is a long day; start early.
  • Giant waves occur mainly in autumn and winter, depending on swell; they are not guaranteed.
  • Check opening hours for the monastery and the castle.
