Portugal is small, but the best places are not always on a train line. The right transport depends on where you are going and how you like to travel.
Trains
Good between major cities, such as Lisbon and Porto, and to Sintra and Cascais from Lisbon. Fast, comfortable and cheap. Limited reach to smaller towns and sanctuaries.
Buses
The bus network covers more places than trains and is affordable, but it is slower and timetables can be limited on weekends.
Rental car
Flexible and good for rural areas. Consider tolls (many motorways use electronic tolls), parking in historic centres and narrow streets in old towns. Insurance and fuel add up.
Ride-hailing and taxis
Practical in Lisbon and Porto for short trips; costly for long distances.
Private driver
A professional driver handles roads, tolls and parking, and you can rest or enjoy the view. Best for day trips, airport transfers, groups, families and anyone who wants to see several places in a day. Compare it with group tours in our article on private vs group tours.
