Best Time to Visit Portugal: A Month-by-Month Guide

Portugal is a year-round destination, but the experience changes with the season. Here is a general guide; weather varies each year, so treat it as a planning aid rather than a forecast.

Spring (March–May)

Mild temperatures, blooming landscapes and lighter crowds than summer. Excellent for Sintra, Évora and wine areas. Showers are possible, especially in March. In May, Fátima holds major pilgrimages on the 12th–13th.

Summer (June–August)

Warm and sunny, with long days. It is the busiest time and the hottest inland: in places such as Évora temperatures can be very high. Beaches are at their best. Book accommodation and tours early, and start excursions in the morning.

Autumn (September–November)

Often considered the best balance: warm sea, fewer crowds and golden light. October brings the Fátima pilgrimage on the 12th–13th. In November, Lisbon hosts Web Summit (9–12 November 2026), so hotels and transport are busy that week. In late autumn the big Nazaré waves begin.

Winter (December–February)

Cool and wetter, with lower prices and quiet sights. Good for city breaks, food and the winter surf at Nazaré. Pack a rain jacket.

Quick summary

Season Weather Crowds Best for
Spring Mild Moderate Sightseeing, gardens
Summer Hot High Beaches, coast
Autumn Warm to mild Moderate All-round, wine harvest
Winter Cool, rainy Low City breaks, value

Tips

  • Summer midday heat is strong inland; plan indoor stops or an early start.
  • Sea water stays cold on the Atlantic coast even in summer.
  • Holidays and festivals fill hotels; check dates before booking.
